Awareness on Jal Shakti Abhiyan under water conservation.
3rd September Mohaloni: Awareness programme on Jal Shakti Abhiyan - a campaign for water conservation and water security was organized by KVK Namsai (ICAR RC for NEH Region, Arunachal Pradesh Centre, Basar) to encourage the people to join the clarion call by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi to citizens to join hands for water conservation and create a jan-andolan along the lines of the Swachh Bharat Mission, to save water and secure the future. At present 1592 blocks in 256 districts are under water stress condition and special intervention is being carried out by the central as well as state agencies to the short out the water scarcity and increase the water availability to all. In this continuation, KVK Namsai joins the hand and created awareness and imparted scientific knowledge and methodology on water conservation in agriculture, horticulture and livestock farming at Mohaloni village of Namsai district. In his inaugural speech Dr. Manish Kanwat, Senior Scientist and Head explained about Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign and why this programme was started with the example of Latur district of Maharashtra. He also highlighted problems of water scarcity facing by the farmers in different part of India due to uneven rainfall distribution in the country. Scientist Agrometeorology, Bidyapati Ngangom highlighted about the Jal Shakti Abhiyan campaign and its important aspect in water conservation viewing the current stressed situation of water resources existing in our country. She explained the importance of water conservation in agriculture and horticultural crops, water requirements of major crops of Namsai district as fruits, vegetables and spices, rice and maize. She spoke about different agronomic practices like mulching that can adopt in crop cultivation. She also encouraged farmers to adopt rice cropping system with soil moisture conservation practices and also told to choose crop varieties that can grow with less water consumption. She also shared about the different technologies and methods of rain water harvesting and surface runoff water harvesting, like roof top water harvesting, collection of water and store for reuse rather than allowing it to runoff that can be adopt by them. She also encouraged farmers to adopt improved water management technologies, such as pressurized irrigation system, i.e., drip and sprinkler, roof water harvesting, micro-rainwater harvesting structures, and IFS module along with Agro-met Advisory Service of weather forecast and how it will be helpful to all the farmers. Scientist Animal Science, Dr. BKD Borah explained the application of principle of ‘per drop more crop’ in livestock farming by providing required quantity of water to their livestock and poultry. A total number of 31farmers including GB of village were attended the programme.
